Guest Opinion: Companies manipulate laws to their benefit – The News

The 2012 presidential election is around the corner and without doubt it will be the most contentious political race. Super PACs are causing many Americans to wonder about the direction this country is going and who owns who and what.

The Supreme Court ruling of Citizens United has created a meltdown of previous legal campaign election laws and placed into view huge financial contributions from corporations or otherwise without public knowledge of who is contributing to this potential buyout of our American freedom.

Along with Citizen United is the American Legislative Exchange Council, which allows corporations to manipulate state legislators into making changes to the laws they desire and which directly benefit their bottom line.

Citizens United and ALEC both are trying to leverage our voting, change laws about women’s rights, potential voting without public knowledge and possible influence of foreign international influence to govern our laws.

These changes are a fundamental disaster to our economic growth. Corporations are manipulating Congress, lobbyists and politicians at the local, state and federal levels for their own financial gains. Inside politics have governed this election because of taxes and more possible deregulation.

President Barack Obama wants the richest 2 percent to pay their fair share of taxes, which will help our debt reduction. President Bill Clinton raised the taxes on the wealthy, which lowered the national debt during his term.

The start of the George W. Bush administration brought a change to our tax reforms and lowered taxes on the wealthy. These tax cuts were only to be in place for a short period of time. But it’s been more than 10 years that tax cuts for the wealthy have in place at the expense of the middle class.

President Obama has not been able to make any reforms because of stalemates in Congress. Doesn’t this produce lack of financial responsibility and future growth for our economy?

This is one reason to re-elect President Obama
