Election 2012: Reflections of a primary run-off
The lines were unbelievably long on this very hot July 31st. At first glance, this Primary election run-off of 2012, people were lined up within the Annex of the Champion Forest Baptist Church where the voting was taking place. The morning voters came steadily, filling the smaller entry and hallway of the building which led me to think, time to read a book this day was not possible.
Eventually it became apparent the election workers may not even have lunch or dinner!
As a precinct chair in my neighborhood, Memorial Northwest, 0601, I wanted to be involved in the run-off election. With a small turn-out in May it was determined to consolidate precincts. Twice I called to offer my self for a position as clerk.
After the swearing-in, lead by our Election Judge, he told us as we are both parties in the same room we are non-political this day and will assist each other as needed. We did, they did.
They came. They continued to come, the wheel chair bound, people on crutches, the frail elderly, parents with babies and children, one man just released from hospital after undergoing chemo was willing to stand outside, by this time, in the hot sun for over two hours to exercise his right to vote! I escorted him past the hundreds of voters who happily gave him permission to pass them. Another gentleman on radiation after recent brain cancer surgery, fortunately, arrived early enough to not wait too long. Another young man just out of hospital suffering from kidney failure was brought to wait his turn on a chair in the election room, as we visited I learned he was in the wrong place to cast his ballot and had time to get to the correct polling place.
(Over two thousand souls represented 5 area precincts.)
The air conditioning was not functioning well in the building, and as the number of voters grew in lines mightily, the custodian opened a large room,
