Mount Vernon’s Front Door Makeover

Much of the woodwork throughout Mount Vernon is made of local yellow pine, which was neither fancy nor expensive. George Washington employed graining to make the wood in his house appear as if it were mahogany, which was much more rare and luxurious. Watch as current-day master artisan Malcomb Robson touches up the west (front) door, restoring it to its glory days in the late 1790s when it welcomed the hundreds of guests who came to visit the former president in his retirement.
